The congregation had gathered for church service at the home of the Jonas Millers. Seated in the menâs section with his father and brother, David closed his eyes and prayed for forgiveness, assistance and to regain his memory. He wanted a future and needed his past back.
Seated in the women and childrenâs section with Alta on her right and his mother and sister to her left, Fannie looked lovely in her royal blue dress, white top garments and prayer kapp. Over these last weeks during their time together, heâd felt a strong connection with her...as if he already knew her inside and out. But that wasnât possible.
David had no idea if Fannie felt the same way. He took comfort in the realization theyâd shared something special while theyâd taken shelter from the storm. Heâd offered her comfort from her fear of thunderstorms, and sheâd done the same when heâd suffered one of his excruciating headaches. Closing his eyes, he recalled how wonderful and right itâd felt to hold her in his arms.
As if his attention drew her, Fannie glanced his way and smiled. His heart thumping at her expression, he had to remind himself that now wasnât the time to consider changing their relationship. Over the weekend heâd had flashes of memories.
David was afraid to hope. Some of the images heâd seen had been too disturbing to contemplate. Maybe one day soon heâd remember everything, and nothing he recalled would prove to be the least bit frightening to him. Only then would he be able to try for more than friendship with Fannie. With eyes closed, he offered up a prayer to the Lord that his fear wasnât based in reality. He needed a change in his situation soon.
Jonas Miller opened the service and continued after the other preacher had spoken briefly. David listened, sang and prayed, hoping for a miracle.
For him, the service seemed to fly by. After Preacher Jonas gave the serviceâs closing remarks, members of the congregation began to file out of the room. David stood and followed his father and brother as they worked to move benches and set up tables in the great room for the midday meal. Because it was a beautiful day with temperatures in the low eighties, his father told him earlier that church members would have the option of eating indoors or outside.
The windows in the Miller house were open, allowing in the warm summer breeze. With the tables for dining and food in the house, David went outside to see if he could help with the furniture setup in the backyard. But the men were done with the work there. After debating what to do next, he looked for Fannie as he returned to the house. As expected, he found her in the kitchen pulling dishes and platters from the refrigerator.
âMay I help?â he asked softly from behind her. She gasped, lifting her head, banging it against the shelf above where sheâd been working. âIâm sorry! Are you hurt?â
She straightened, her face red.
